CANCER
RESEARCH PROJECT
Late Param Poojya
P. K. Sardeshmukh Maharaj & Dr. S.P.Sardeshmukh came across some
incurable cancer patients during medical practice. Some of them
were referred by Respected Balasaheb Bharde and his wife Mrs. Indumati
Bharde. It was observed that the patients were getting good symptomatic
relief. There were regular discussion regarding Ayurved and Cancer
with Dr.
Arvind Kulkarni, radiation oncologist, ex- HOD Bombay Hospital
and honarary oncologist in Lokmanya Tilak Hospital. The outcome
of such discussions established Cancer Research Project in March
1994. Dr. Arvind Kulkarni was the co-ordinator of the project and
the inspiration behind it was Respected Late Param Poojya P. K.
Sardeshmjukh Maharaj and Respected Balasaheb Bharde. (Research
Report) Cancer is a serious disease and seems to be affecting
more & more people as years go by. No definite cure has been
found yet for most of the cancers. In advanced stage, this disease
causes a lot of suffering to the patients and to the families of
the suffering patients as well. The currently accepted methods of
treatment e.g. surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy are associated
with a lot of deformity, side reaction and toxicity. Further more
these methods do not always lead to cure of cancer or relief from
suffering.
Ayurved Hospital
and Research Center have undertaken clinical trials to find out
whether or not Ayurvedic line of treatment can provide better results
in the treatment of cancer.
Confirmed Cancer
patient is registered in the project and clinical diagnosis including
"Nadi Pariksha" is carried out and appropriate treatment
is given to the patient to find out efficacy of Ayurvedic line of
treatment in-
1) Reducing
pain and suffering in cancer patients.
2) Causing regression of cancer growth.
3) Leading to cure of certain cancers.
4) Helping to improve general conditions of cancer patients towards
a normal life.
Dr. Arvind kulkarni, a cancer specialist, who was attached to Bombay
Hospital for 20 yrs. and is attached to Ruby Hall, Pune is co-ordinating
the project jointly with Dr. S.P. Sardeshmukh, Director of Ayurved
Hospital and Research Center at Wagholi. A similar program has also
been initiated in Mumbai. Dr. Shirish Kumthekar is also co-ordninating
this project in Solapur.
Many patients
have been treated since April 1994, The results are encouraging.
Initial observations suggest that, Ayurvedic treatment is highly
beneficial as a supplementary line of treatment to existing methods
of modern medicine eg. Surgey, Radiotherapy, chemotherapy etc.
Aims and objectives of the Project:
To study the causes:-
- Dietary
- Behavioral
- Psychological
- To reduce the pain and suffering of cancer patients
- To improve the general condition of the patients
- To increase the immunity of the patient by which the spread can be controlled.
Patients are called by prior appointments. A detailed case history is taken by the assistant physicians, which takes about two hours,. The pathological reports are studied. An Ayurvedic diagnosis is done after analyzing the case.
Patients registered in the project are divided into 4 groups, A,B,C,D.
‘A' group- This includes patients who have confirmed cancer reports and wish to take exclusive Ayurvedic treatment and do not take the conventional treatments available.
‘B' group- Patients who show recurrence inspite of the conventional modern treatment.
‘C' group – Patients who take Ayurvedic treatment along with other conventional allopathic treatment.
‘D' group - Patients who have taken allopathic treatment prior to 6 months or more and wish to take Ayurvedic treatment as prevention. Ayurvedic supplementary
treatment has also shown distinct advantage in improving general
condition, vitality and giving good pain relief. It has been observed
that side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy are reduced by
Ayurvedic treatment.
Two international conferences, ‘Ayurved for Cancer' were organised in 1997 and 2002, which was a platform offered to present research papers by physicians, nationally & internationally. Researchers from Australia, Japan & Germany presented their papers.
