Ayurved is science of life. The objective of Ayurved is to preserve health and to restore the health of the diseased. Panchakarma has a crucial role in accomplishing this purpose.

With the blessings of Shri. Prabhakar Keshav Sardeshmukh Maharaj and with the guidance of Dr.S.P. Sardeshmukh the Panchakarma Research Centre was started in 1997 at Vishwashanti Dham, Wagholi, Pune. Numerous patients from Japan, Australia, Germani, Switzerland, Italy, Holland have taken the benefit of treatment at Bharatiya Sanskriti Darshan Trust's Panchakarma Centre.

One of the successful Sumo wrestlers from Japan was highly benefited by this treatment. According to him a Sumo weighing 75 kg can even beat Yokozuna (Prominent ones and of the highest weight) if he has the will power and mind control to use the right technique at the right time. Ayurvedic medication not only deals with your mind and physique but also touches your soul was the belief that inspired the most to go in for Panchakarma therapy.

According to Ayurved, human body is composed of the three doshas, the seven dhatus and three malas. Equilibrium of the dosha, dhatu and mala maintains the healthy state of body and mind. But imbalance in any of them gives rise to disease. The purpose of Ayurved is to maintain this equilibrium. This can be achieved by two methods. One is to pacify the dosha or by eliminate the dosha by nearby route i.e. Panchakarma. Panchakarma acts as curative as well as preventive therapy. It is purifying as well as rejuvenating procedure.

The prerequisites of Panchakarma are Snehana (Oleation) and Swedana (Sudation) therapy. These therapies prepares the body for Panchakarma. Snehana can be done in two manners-Internal and External.

Internal Snehana is achieved by consumption of ghee or oil in the necessary amount. External Snehana is done by application of sneha i.e. ghee or oil all over the body. Internal Snehana i.e. oral consumption of ghee or oil is mandatory before vamana and virechana. It helps to soften the dosha and eliminate it out of the body. After internal Snehana other prerequisites of Panchakarma are fulfilled and then Panchakarma is carried out.

Panchakarma is consisting of five main procedures:

1. Vaman (Emesis )
2. Virechana (Purgative)
3. Basti (Medicated enema)
4. Raktamokshana (Blood letting)
5. Nasya (Nasal drops)

Vamana (Emesis ) : A process in which the upsurged doshas are expelled out of the body through mouth, administering the medicines meant for inducing vamana. It is useful in chronic ailments of Kapha like cold, cough bronchitis etc. It is also useful in skin diseases.(Eczema, Psoriasis, White spots etc)

Virechana (Purgative): It is a process in which the upsurged doshas are expelled out of the body through the anus. It is achieved by administering the medicines meant for inducing virechana. This procedure is useful in chronic ailments of pitta like hyperacidity, improper digestion etc. It is also useful for skin diseases.

Basti (Medicated Enema): When enema is given by medicated oil, ghee or different kinds of decoction it is known as Basti. Basti is the principle treatment in disorders caused by vata like arthritis, sciatica, spondylitis etc.

Raktamokshana (Blood letting): Blood letting from the body is known as Raktamokshana. It is usually done by venesection or by annoying leeches on the required area. This procedure is done principally for pitta, blood disorders. It is extremely beneficial in skin diseases and diseases of spleen and liver.

Nasya (Nasal drops): In Nasya medicine is administered through the nostrils. The medicine is used in the form of juice, powder, oil, ghee or decoction. Nasya is bebeficial in the diseases of ear, nose, throat, head. It cures diseases like chronic rhinitis, chronic headache. Nasya improves the circulation in the hand.
